*Lovettsville Town Council Vacancy - Applications Due Friday, June 30, 2017 at 4:30PM*

The Mayor & Town Council are accepting applications from Lovettsville residents to fill an unexpected vacancy on the Council with a term that ends June 30, 2018.  To be considered, please submit the Application for Town Service to the Town Clerk by Friday, June 30, 2017 at 4:30PM.

The Town Council will consider all applicants and select an individual by vote of the Town Council to fill the vacancy for the unexpired term.  Any person appointed to fill a vacancy on the Town Council must meet the same requirements as a candidate for election to the Town Council.  To continue serving after the unexpired term ends, the appointed member must file an application for the next general election and win enough votes to be elected for a four-year term.

Please see below for more information about serving on the Lovettsville Town Council or call Town Hall at 540-822-5788.

About the Town Council
The Town Council is the governing body of the Town of Lovettsville local government.  It is responsible for setting all policies and standards for the operation of Town Government, adopting all ordinances and resolutions, adopting the annual operating and capital budgets, setting all tax rates, adopting the five-year Capital Improvement Program, setting all user fees, approving land use and rezoning decisions, and adopting the Town’s Comprehensive Plan.  Members of the Town Council serve four-year staggered terms. One member may be appointed to the Planning Commission as the Town Council’s Representative to the Planning Commission.

Town Council meetings are typically scheduled twice a month (usually Thursday evenings at 7:30PM), and more frequently during budget season.  Council Members are also expected to participate on the Town’s Committees.

For more information about the role of the Town Government, please refer to the Lovettsville Town Charter.

If you want to run for election to the Town Council in the bi-annual election, you must be a resident of the Town of Lovettsville and file an application with the Loudoun County General Registrar’s Office by the filing deadline prior to the election. Elections occur every two years (in May) in even years with three Council  positions available for one election and three positions available for the next election to meet the requirements of the Town Charter.  The Mayor is elected every two years.

Town of Lovettsville - Requesting Public Records

The Virginia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), located § 2.2-3700 et seq. of the Code of Virginia, guarantees citizens of the Commonwealth and representatives of the media access to public records held by public bodies, public officials, and public employees.

A public record is any writing or recording - regardless of whether it is a paper record, an electronic file, an audio or video recording, or any other format - that is prepared or owned by, or in the possession of a public body or its officers, employees, or agents in the transaction of public business.  All public records are presumed to be open, and may only be withheld if a specific, statutory exemption applies.

The policy of FOIA states that the purpose of FOIA is to promote an increased awareness by all persons of governmental activities.  In furthering this policy, FOIA requires that the law be interpreted liberally, in favor of access, and that any exemption allowing public records to be withheld must be interpreted narrowly.
