The Short History of Oktoberfest (and why we celebrate it in September)

This year Lovettsville will be celebrating its 20th Festival, however the official festival in Munich, German can trace its roots back to 1810 and the wedding of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig and his bride Princess Therese.

In celebration of the October 12 nuptials, a meadow outside the city of Munich was chosen for the site of horse races and other sporting events similar to the Olympic Games. The event was such a success that the event was held the following year and a tradition was born. Surprisingly, the beer that many associate with the event didn’t get served at Oktoberfest until 1881.

Towards the end of the 1800s the start date for Oktoberfest was moved to late September to take advantage of better weather. In that tradition, Lovettsville hosts its annual celebration the last full weekend in September.
